Well we seem to be actually having what was once known as ‘summer’! The good weather is
certainly lifting my spirits, and I hope that everyone is making the most of it. Of course it’s important
to keep our Havanese cool during the warm weather. Whilst their coats do act as a sun screen and
the texture and volume help air circulate through the coat, it is still important to be mindful of the
heat and to keep them out of direct sunlight for long periods of time. It is equally important to
ensure that they are hydrated with a constant source of fresh water available. Owners of the breed
in their native Cuba do keep their Havanese indoors during hot weather, choosing to exercise them
outside in the morning or later in the evening, when it’s cooler.
In the UK, one of my favourite shows took place last Friday – Windsor. We had entered, but sadly
Candy decided to time her season with the show, so we thought it best to stay at home. The judge
on the day was breed specialist Dorothy Bunting, who drew 38 dogs making up an entry of 42. From
her entry, Mrs Bunting selected Miss K Smith’s Larwinsca Princess Leia as her Best Bitch and Best of
Breed. Reserve Best Bitch was awarded to Mr and Mrs Morris’s Classy Cleo Sh CM. Best Dog was
awarded to Mrs J Harper-Dediu’s Skystar’s Sonny and Reserve Best Dog to Mrs L Miles Adorele I’m
the One. Best Special Beginner in Breed was awarded to Mr P Grocock’s Havanamour Moonbeam
Over Havalag and Best Puppy to Mrs J Fitzgerald’s Immelion Galactica for Beaugem, who was also
awarded 4 th in the Puppy Group under Lynn Salt. Well done to all in the cards!
At South Western Toy Dog Club in the UK, Sheila and Darrin Lane had a great day winning 1st in Post Graduate with Starleisha Dazzling Dream ShCM and 1st in Open and Best of Breed with Starleisha Heavens Secret ShCM under judge Leila Tarabad. Well done!
Here in Ireland we had two shows taking place in South Leinster. On Saturday was Kilkenny All Breed
Show. The judge for Havanese was Irish judge, Caryn Coogan. From her entry of three Havanese, she
selected Ms A Rutzel’s Am Ch Kolmar’s Painted Masterpiece as her Green Star Dog and Best of Breed
Winner. Reserve Green Star was awarded to Mr P Summersgill’s Prince Timmy from Bohemica Land.
Green Star Bitch was awarded to Ms B Doherty’s Barbuda Havihara (GC). This was Barbie’s seventh
and crowning Green Star, which means that she is now (subject to IKC ratification) and Irish
Champion. On Sunday, Deise Canine Club held their annual show in Tramore Racetrack. Our judge
was Mrs L Reinelt Gebauer from Germany. From her entry of five havanese, she selected Mr P
Summersgill’s Prince Timmy from Bohemica Land as his Green Star Dog and Best of Breed Winner.
Reserve Green Star Dog was awarded to Dr A Akkad and Mrs O Carty’s Bailemos Poker Face (NETH)
CW ’18 CJW ’18 Jr Ch. Green Star Bitch was awarded to Mr L. A. Prado Pena’s Pt Gr Ch Multi Ch CIB
Amazing Dance Shisuka Multi Jr Ch and Reserve Green Star Bitch was awarded to Ms B Doherty’s
Barbuda Havihara. It was lovely to attend this show, after what feels like a long absence, and catch
up with friends in the sunshine.
This coming week sees Bray and District host their annual championship show in Cloghran. Our judge
is Ms. I. Vojtekova from Slovakia. As of yet, we do not have a breakdown of entries or ring plans
Next show on the calendar in the UK is East of England with Toy Day taking place this Friday. There
are 33 Havanese making up an entry of 37 and the judge is Mrs A J Teasdale. Havanese are second in
ring one after 82 Long Coated Chihuahuas.
Finally, I was very saddened to read the sad news that a fellow Havanese exhibitors’ daughter,
Makyla Carpenter, was tragically killed in America over the weekend. I’m sure I speak for all Havanese
exhibitors over this side of the pond when I say that I’m truly sorry to hear this awful news and are
thinking of her mother Julianna Kindlund-Carpenter and family during this dreadful time.
