Well, the weather in Chihuahua Town has been somewhat miserable this week. Torrential rain battered us and my lot verged on refusing to go out for toilet duties. I’ve tried explaining to them that if they go quickly, they can get back in the dry quickly, but some of them insist on standing on the patio looking like neglected dogs who should be immediately removed and rehomed to someone who is not so cruel as to make them go out and wee in the rain. The obedience instructor in me takes over and refuses to let them manipulate, and we all know how they are very good at training us rather than us training them!
Last weekend was UK Toy Dog and what a lovely show it was. I know it’s a favourite of many of you, and the atmosphere always seems less frantic than Crufts, with some lovely shopping. My only gripe is that the concrete floor in the main hall was riddled with cracks and made it somewhat uneven. I watched the judging closely and could see the dogs actively avoiding the uneven parts of the ground, which I imagine would have made assessment of movement all the harder for the judges.
In Longs, Jill Palmer and Willy Heap took the DCC and BOB with Ch Penapetit Plantinum, his 5th CC. BCC was Sharon Tidos with Ch Go My Way JP’s Black Cherry (Imp). RBCC was Colin Craggs’ Reynoldco Sweet Dreams (her first) and RDCC Shelda Hornby’s Ch Bramerita Mr Holmes. There were some super individual successes: Michelle Emmerson’s X-ismirelle’s Boy Dogomania going first in MPD, Leana Evans’ Lemaritz Soul Survivor first in PGD and Mairi Austin’s Ch Mairichis Blossom JW first in VB.
In Smooths, DCC and BOB was Beverley Sutton’s Ch Mr Incredible De L’isle Au Vert Coteau Nikitos, RDCC Diane Fothergill’s Diamonchi Man On The Moon, BCC was Christine Fairburn’s Tidos Ghost Protocol and RBCC Diane Fothergill’s Diamonchi Shooting Star JW Sh. CM. Again, lots of individual achievements; Nicki Wilkes’ Lukarra Glimpse Of Gold was placed in PB, her first time out of MP and Lee Humphreys’ Amarantos Cassini 3rd in MPB (I think it was her first show).
The Chi’s had significant success in the stakes classes. In the Higham Press Champion Stakes, Bramerita Mr Holmes came first out of an entry of 33 with 10 absent. In the Royal Canin Puppy Stakes Diane Fothergill came first in AVToyMPD with Diamonchi Mister Moon and then went on to win the Puppy stakes overall. In the RC Veteran Stakes, Mairi Austin’s Mairichis Blossom JW was 2nd in VB and Sharon Hughes’ Trefnanney Prudence 4th. The star of the day was also Sharon’s Prudence in the Toy Special Beginners Group, judged by Frank Kane, who won the group.
In the open shows, at Mansfield Breeze Hilton’s Ismirelle’s The Mad Hatter At Hermosoangel went BOB and G2. At Birtley Wendy Turnbull’s Somergemz Warrior Princess For Hurascalexi went BPIB, Nigel Walker’s Sunlea Friesian Fancy took BOB. At Keighley Nicki Wilkes’ Boetandales Seafarer At Lukarra took BOB under Breeze Hilton.
I was handed a schedule for Coventry and District open show on 20 May at the Kennel Club Building at Stoneleigh. They have always scheduled classes for smooths but have added longs this year so that’s one to get your entries in for in order to keep the classes.
Last week, at the obedience training club I am part of, we put on an intermediate taster session and I thought I’d put my Isaac in this class and see how he got on (he’s done two rounds of beginners). He loved it. He learnt some new things and picked them up really quickly; this sort of training really does develop the bond between dog and handler. We tend to get big dogs coming through the door at training and see very few toy breeds, and given that I believe they can do everything the big breeds can, is a bit of a shame. I also go along to obedience competitions with my Papillon and see very few toy breeds there too. I think there may be a gap in the market here……
Please do send me your news. I stalk you all on facebook for your news and show results, but I don’t have all of you on my friends list so I am mindful there’s probably a lot I miss. Enjoy your week with your tiny canines and stay dry!
