How are we all in Chihuahua Town this week? There’s been plenty of action on social media. I read a post by Francis Conchetti (I think I’ve spelt that right!) of Misty Meadow Chihuahuas about muzzles. I have noticed a trend in photographs I’m seeing on facebook of Chihuahuas from Europe with shorter muzzles which are quite turned up and starting to look more and more brachycephalic, and this was supported by the post I read. I look at these photos, which are then followed with comments that the dog is stunning etc. The dogs start to win at dog shows and this adaptation from the breed standard becomes desired.
As the Chihuahua is classed as a brachycephalic breed, I was a member of the group on facebook ‘Proudly Pedigree; Fit For Life’ which was set up in response to the extreme anti brachy group CRUFFA. It was a group I read and followed but didn’t often post on, but last week I was appalled at some of the comments I was reading, so promptly left. The well-known vet Emma Milne, an avid supporter of CRUFFA, had posted on her blog some weeks ago a comment that many interpreted as her saying vets should refuse to perform C sections on brachy breeds. Since then there has been much on the PP group about brachy friendly vets. Then last week a vet posted on the group that not all vets are anti brachy/bad at their jobs/in it for the money, and what then followed was a diatribe of abuse towards her. It’s things like this that really don’t do us any favours, so I quietly left the group, not wishing to be associated with it any more. Working in a job where social media is the bane of my life, I do so wish people thought a little more about what they post on these groups.
Ulster Chihuahua Club’s champ show was last weekend. As many of you won’t have seen the results, I’m going to list the class winners. At White Rose Lesley Taylor’s Arkoschi Call Me Mr Sox went BPIB, PG4 and won AV toy PG under Sarah Griggs. At Isle of Wight Carmen West’s Doobyave Heighters Hush went BPIB, RBOB and G3.
I also came across a pedigree papers scam this week by way of the Dog Lover’s Registration Club. The ‘pedigree’ showed a Chihuahua with the Donami affix. A quick check on MyKC revealed that the dog is certainly not KC registered, and I understand Christine Minton is aware, but that there is very little that can be done. It is apparent that the ‘breeder’ is a puppy farmer who registers with the DLRC and uses the affixes of well-known show kennels. The ‘pedigree’ of the dog also included dogs bearing the Chihgra and Bramerita affixes. So I’ve been doing a bit of research this week in to how we can protect our affixes. Names and words cannot be copyrighted, but I believe that they can be trademarked. I’m currently looking in to this for my own affix so I’ll let you all know if it is possible, and what the process is when I have more information.
In the meantime, enjoy your week with your little Mexican Jumping Beans. See you all at WELKS! Let’s hope the rain keeps off.
