City Of Birmingham Canine Association
Championship Show
This was my second time giving CCs to this exciting breed and I want to thank the City of Birmingham for inviting me. I also want to thank the exhibitors for giving me such a good entry.
Before I judge any breed, which isn’t part of my daily life, I always fresh up my memory by reading the KC standard. If it’s a foreign breed I also look at the FCI standard because that is generally more detailed in its descriptions than the UK one.
Before I started reading I did of course know that the Portuguese Water Dog is rectangular in it’s outline, but it’s interesting to see how different the two standards describe the general appearance of the breed. Here is what they are saying:
KC: Robust, well balanced, rectangular in outline, very strongly muscled on shoulders.
FCI: Of almost square shape, with the length of body approximately equal to height at the withers.
Having digested this I was looking for a dog which was just off the square. I also wanted a dog with a wide and deep chest reaching to the elbows. The ribs should be well sprung and carried well back with a short and strong loin.
Many of the dogs shown under me fitted nicely into the picture I had in my head. A few were, however, too long in loin and some were too short on their legs, which spoiled their outline. Fronts were also a problem. A few were too shallow and lacked the strong boned and well-muscled shoulders which is so desirable.

1st: 3012 SPENCER Mr S M & Mrs M L Islekeepers Gudenuff. I really liked this dog. He was of excellent type. He had good proportions, was built well and moved very well when he wanted to. I would have considered him for the RCC if had behaved better.
Class 984 OD (9 Entries) Abs: 3
1st: 3014 THOMPSON-MORGAN, Mrs C & MORGAN Mr E Ch Belleville Anjo Negro This was the star of the day. My heart jumped as soon as he entered the ring. He has a beautiful head and correct proportions. The length from his point of shoulder to point of buttock is slightly greater than height at withers. He is well developed in front and perfectly angulated behind. It was a joy to see him move. Portuguese Water Dogs don’t come much better that this CC & BOB. I was pleased to see that he also was BOB at the breed show which followed under Jeff Horswell and that he was short listed in the group.
2nd: 3005 REDDIN, Mrs R & WILLIAMS Mr B Ch Rarjoe Quicksilver Another wonderful dog being close to Anjo Negro in type and quality. He has a fabulous personality and outline and he moves freely around the ring. I did, however, preferred the front movements of the winner. RCC.
3rd: 3006 SAMUELSON Mrs A & Mr D Olhao Carlos Castro Marim
Class 987 PB (2 Entries) Abs: 1
1st: 2992 MAINLAND Mr R Dragonbank Sea Ballata . This was a very promising youngster which pleased me no end. She had an excellent outline and was well developed for age. She moved with the right attitude. I wish her good luck on the way up the lather. BP
Class 988 JB (4 Entries) Abs: 2
1st: 2982 FAHEY, Miss F & SHIRE Mr J Bentarsna White Waves Cjw. A bitch with nice temperament which need time to develop. I would have liked to see more strength in her foreface and she could have had better spring of ribs. Front could have been better.
2nd: 3019 WATTS Mr D & Mrs B Micador I Gotta A Feeling. Bitch of good type which needs to develop in front. She is also too week behind.
Class 989 PGB (10 Entries) Abs: 3
1st: 3011 SPENCER Mrs M L Islekeepers Filha De Calice. Lovely bitch of excellent type. Stands and moves very well.
2nd: 2987 HULFORD Miss C Winterkloud Lunar Eclipse. Similar to the winner in type and quality but preferred the presence and the attitude of the winner.
3rd: 2980 BRADLEY Miss N A Belleville Anjo Do Mar
Class 990 LB (7 Entries) Abs: 1
1st: 2989 KILLILEA Miss H J Belleville Anjo Jelo At Majesixs. This bitch was made in the same mould as my CC wining dog and I do now see that they are brother and sister. She is upstanding and full of life and when you go over her you can’t help being impress because your hands are saying yes, yes and yes again as they go along. Maybe she could have been an inch longer, but if so, all her virtues compensated for that. Her neck was carried high and she probably had the best carriage of them all on the day. One to be proud of CC & BOS
2nd: 3021 WOODCOCK Mrs T M Belleville Olhos De Anjo. Can you believe it, this is the sister of my two CC winners. She is also quality all through and she is well constructed. She has, however, not got the same posture as the winner; she falls a bit on her front when she moves.
3rd: 3007 SAMUELSON Mrs A & Mr D Somebody To Love Da Pedra Da Anixa NAF
Class 991 OB (8 Entries) Abs: 4
1st: 2985 GREEN Mrs C A Grandway Mistique. This was another first-class bitch which impressed me. She has a nice head, is well proportioned and constructed. She moves very well, but she doesn’t quite carry herself as well as Anjo Jelo. She did, however push very hard for the top spot.
2nd: 3009 SMITH Mr & Mrs W J & N M Auldhelm Xquisite Sh.CM. Open bitch was a good class and this lady wasn’t far from the top. I liked everything about her, but she wasn’t as eager on the move as Mystique.
3rd: 2998 MCGILL Miss S Winterkloud Double Trouble
Class 992 GCB (2 Entries) Abs: 0
