The Kennel Club would like to issue a clarification on the appropriate content for heelwork tests in obedience and particularly in relation to novice tests.
Regulation G(C)4.d specifies that ‘Heelwork may include large circles or arcs as part of the heelwork exercise’ but also states that for a novice test, turns of 90 degrees to the left or right and 180 degrees to the left or right, as well as diagonal turns to the right, should be included.
Therefore, a novice heelwork test should include right and left turns and must not consist solely of circles. However, circles, arcs and about turns may be included.
More information on obedience can be found at www.thekennelclub.org.uk/activities/obedience. All enquiries should be directed to obedience@thekennelclub.org.uk.
