Migh what Weather are we having at the moment it’s hot, hot, hot. With this in mind here are a few tips to keep your dogs cool……….. Wet towel on the floor for them to lay on this helps to cool, it’s easier on the belly as there is less hair and it’s where they get warmer, walk them early in the morning or late at night, don’t let them in the garden even in the shade it is very hot they can still overheat, I find coconut water keeps dogs hydrated better, they love the taste they also don’t need to drink so much in one go baring in mind some dogs can’t take a big intake of water at once, even munching on cool raw carrots can help they have natural juices and it’s a cool treat to keep them going before dinner which is best fed later than you’d normally feed them, use a fan if needed and don’t let them exert energy even in the house running about, give them mental stimulation games, a tired mind is a tired dog there are plenty of games you can buy now or even give making one a go yourself. Some tips NOT to do, DON’T give ice cubes these actually have the reverse effect on the dogs temperature system the body will think it’s cold and actually warm the dog up, don’t give raw frozen meat or bones again the same reason as the ice cubes, but also in this heat raw meat gets easily contaminated as it thaws and don’t wet your dog and let them out the water heats up and can cause the dogs to get even hotter. Please please do NOT take your dog out in the car, there is no need for any dogs to be in cars let them relax at home and stay cool, the damage to the internal organs can’t be seen, but warming up and cooling down quickly does the organs and muscles no good as an athlete we are taught how to warm up and cool down properly, to stretch and drink small tepid amounts of water, dogs don’t know this so it’s up to us owners to be wary of what our loyal companions are doing. If you have any doubts that your dog has heatstroke no matter how mild go straight to a Vet, don’t ask Google or the experts on Facebook groups, timing can be everything and unless you have X-Ray vision you can’t see if internal damage has started or what strain has been put on your dogs heart. BE SAFE, BE SEEN BY A VET.
In show news huge congratulations to Lise Durlot of Swala Pala Basenjis and German Pinschers with your new Champions in both breeds.
I haven’t been sent any news from other owners in the breed, there have been a couple of shows, you can find the results on Higham Press or Fossedata.
24 days until the first of the 3 shows in Amsterdam (World show) getting excited now. I wrote to the organisers about what they have in place if the heat keeps up, they have said there is good air conditioning in the building, there will be 5 lines and they will only do spot checks as people go in so we’re not standing around for so long. Thank you to them, this has put alot of our minds at rest. As most cars have Air con now it makes it easier to travel if you really need to, but please be prepared, pack extra water, something dogs can stand on if you break down so they aren’t standing on hot concrete or grass, take a shelter with you, there isn’t always shade on motorways or service stations and cool coats are a great bit of equipment and the cool mats, try and get yourself portable air con units, as with all modern technology it isn’t always reliable always better to have back up, and if you’re caught in traffic sometimes it’s not powerful enough at a standstill.
All that said, enjoy the summer and look after yourselves too.
