It seems to have been a busy and successful weekend for Havanese around the world at the weekend, in a variety of different disciplines. It was really heart-warming to read about Nicola Westgate and her two beautiful boys Harley and Bailey. Harley and Bailey are volunteers for Canine Concern, a fabulous organisation that provides visiting therapy dogs to homes and hospitals. Last week Harley and Bailey had their second visit to a local care home. The visit was a huge success, with the residents sharing the joy these two boys bring. I believe it was lovely to see the smiles of the residents, and both boys naturally loved all the attention they received. Because of their joyous and happy disposition, Havanese make wonderful therapy dogs, so huge well done to Nicola, Bailey and Harley!
In the show world, I see in Australia Gail Ransom’s puppy, ‘Twist’ Karyme Zensational, won Best Puppy in Show at the Royal Bathurst Show. Philip William’s ‘Jay Jay’, Sup Ch Haski Just Go With It also won a Best in Show over the weekend.
In Ireland, the Mid West held their second Championship Show. I was sad to see that only one Havanese was present on the day; giving we’ve been getting entries of 11 – 13 Havanese recently it is quite a drop. However, Ashleigh Rutzel’s, Kolmar’s Painted Masterpiece, had a good day winning the Group and being placed third Best in Show. He was handled by Julie Connolly, and this was his fifth show here in Ireland, having made his debut at both shows at the Celtic Winner’s Weekend and attending both shows at the Combined Canine Club’s Easter Weekend.
We have no shows here in Ireland this weekend, however normal service resumes the following weekend with the ‘Mini Circuit’. Hopefully we will have better numbers for both days.
In Swedan, breed history was made by Sara Hansson and her lovely boy, Alvin. These fabulous team took their third CAC in Rally Obedience Master Class, making Alvin the first Havanese to achieve this Championship Title in Swedan! Sara and Alvin are inseparable friends, and have previously competed successfully in Dancing competitions together. It is wonderful to see their hard work and dedication pay off. Huge congratulations Sara and Alvin, we are all so proud of you both!
I had been following the journey of a lovely little Havanese in America, Shiraz, who is owned by Heather and Ryan Andrews. Shiraz is a very brave Havanese, who was diagnosed with Grade 2 Sarcoma in December last year. In February, Shiraz had her leg amputated. The surgery went well and she recovered quite fast and the vets believed that the cancer had not spread further. Unfortunately over the weekend, little Shiraz took a turn for the worst. She spent Saturday night sleeping on the bed of Heather’s son Ryan and wagged her tail right up until she peacefully took her final journey on Sunday. I would like to express my sincere condolences to Heather and Ryan and all your family. I hope you all have strength and comfort during this difficult time. Run free beautiful Shiraz.
