The end is in sight – January is nearly over! I know it’s a cliché, but it really and truly is the longest month of the year. Thankfully February and spring are just around the corner. Let’s hope for some milder weather.
On Saturday just gone, the Navan Dog Show held its annual Best of the Best Supermatch. Representing the Havanese were Akkad & Carty’s Ir Ch Bailemos Poker Face Jr Ch CW 18 BJWNL 18 and Akkad’s Multi Ch Sup Ch Gr Ch CIB Amazing Dance Shisuka Multi Jr Ch. All proceeds from the event went to Pieta House Charity – a centre for the prevention of suicide or self-harm – a very worthy cause indeed! Judging the Top Dog and Top Bitch matches were Mr S Wildberg and Ms C Chapman. Each judge took it in turns judging rounds of dogs and bitches were Bailemos Poker Face did very well, winning the first three rounds, but was knocked out in round 4 by the lovely Shetland Sheepdog, Ir & GB Ch Edglonian Blue Fortune of Navarrem, owned by Patrick Fortune and Emilio Castillo. However it was Amazing Dance Shisuka who really flew the flag for the breed, winning her way through to the finals and finishing in the Top 4 Bitches. The finals were judged by Mr S Hall, Ms C Champman and Mr G Robertson. What a fantastic win for the breed! Apart from the excitement in participating in the event, I must say that the atmosphere was electric at this well run event. Everyone was in great spirits and the sportsmanship and comradery was second to none. Huge well done to all the team involved in organising and running this fantastic event.
The next day saw the Dublin Cocker Society host their annual open show. The judge for Havanese was Mrs S Murphy. From her entry of 5, she selected Carty-Parge & Parge’s Flordecuba Amarillo Star as 1st Junior Bitch and Best of Breed Winner. Michael and Dolores Kane’s Mournemount Fairy Princess was selected as Best Baby Puppy in Breed. Mrs Murphy later judged the Group and selected Flordecuba Amarillo Star for Top Honours. This young bitch then went on to win the Puppy States, Best Puppy in Show, and Reserve Best in Show, under Ms E Archibald. Another great day for our breed!
There are no shows for Havanese next weekend in Ireland. I am not entirely sure about the UK, but will try to keep an eye on things. There are Oriental and Tibetan Breeds Shows taking place in Cloghran on Saturday, if anyone fancy’s a look? Dr Grime’s is also having an eye clinic on Saturday. I’m taking three dogs along for their tests and would encourage anyone who is considering breeding from their Havanese to take their dogs along.
